So, I went to the junkyard the other day without anything particular in mind. But then I noticed a shiny metal intake with a bright red filter in one of the engine bays of the import section. Alright, not bad... it probably won't fit my car or even make a difference anyway, but it's worth a shot since the intake is really the only thing I can upgrade without commissioning one-of-a-kind parts. Anyway, I walk over to it and find that the filter is torn open and the tube is full of holes. No idea whether this all happened in the yard, but if not, no wonder the car ended up there.

When you do this, do you just go in and say you'd like to look around a little bit? Only time I've ever been to a junkyard it was like a storefront and I was only there for 5 minutes. Sounds like just wandering around could be cool though.

Most yards will allow you to go in and scout for free. Others might require you to pay the normal yard fee (like $1) to go in.

So do you just go into their building or whatever and ask if you can look around?

The ones I've been to have a desk where they check your toolbox, take your dollar, stamp your hand, and send you on your way. If there's a sign that says "self service" or something similar, then you'll be able to go in.

But yeah, most have a small cover charge to make up for theft, vandalism, and whatnot.

Yes. Well, if it's a Pick-n-Pull type yard. There are some yards that don't allow it but they'll tell you up front that you're not allowed in the yard.

Where did you go? The only one I've been to you weren't allowed to walk the yard. You told them what you were looking for and they would get it.
